Founded in a Manhattan loft in 1941, Coach had very humble beginnings as a family-run workshop that crafted leather wallets and billfolds. However, it got taken to new heights in the early 1950s when Miles Cahn - an employee who later bought the brand - noticed the way leather baseball gloves become softer over time and set out to mirror this process when creating Coach goods. The result? Leather accessories that were supple yet durable and could absorb dye very easily, allowing Coach to colour its products with deeper hues. Soon after, Coach created its first handbag for women and in 1961 it employed Bonnie Cashin - who specialised in sportswear - as a designer. As well as introducing shoes, coin purses, and a range of other accessories to the collection, Cashin conceived the silver toggle that became a Coach trademark - a stylish touch that was inspired by her convertible sports car.
