The amauti is a traditional parka worn by Inuit women of the eastern Canadian arctic. Up until about two years of age, a child nestles against the mother's back in the amaut, the built-in baby pouch just below the hood. The pouch is large and comfortable for the baby and as well as protecting them from the elements also helps develop the bond between mother and child. This 70s amauti is made from thick cream wool and has traditional decorative ribbon stitched on the front, back, sleeves and around the baby pouch/hood.
