1940s Hand Made Reproduction Asahi Baseball Groundsman Jacket L
Perfect condition and very rare, one off “fantasy” sports team jacket. This jacket is highly unique and the only one in existence. Created as a tribute item to the famous Japanese-Canadian baseball team Asahi. The jacket was created by a dedicated sports fan who loves vintage uniforms, in his spare time he would create then feature on blog. The blog is now sadly defunct but we’ve been lucky enough to secure 2 examples of his passion.
The Asahi baseball team are legends in North America’s favourite pastime and living gods in their native Canada. The team was established in 1914, form entirely by Canadians from Japanese descent. Playing out of Vancouver's Oppenheimer Park, in the city's Japantown. Matsujiro Miyazaki, the team from 1922 won the Pacific Northwest Championship five years in a row. The success was brought about by a revolutionary tactic of ballplaying called “brainball” against stronger opposition employing tactical strategies such as base stealing, The team was forced to disband in 1941 as a direct result of internment camps set up by the allied forces to “rehome” or in a better word - contain the local Japanese immigrant population . The camps were created to stop any sympathizers or spy’s that could pass messages back to their homeland. The fact that a high percentage had never stepped foot in Japan and did not speak Japanese did not save them.
Since the dark days of WW2 The Ashahi have been inducted and honoured in numerous Hall of Fames, rightly regaining the respect they deserve.
The jacket is constructed by hand out of calico weave and cotton twill
