It's safe to say that there is no fashion event quite as highly anticipated as the annual Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala. Every year, crowds of celebs come together to celebrate the museum's latest exhibit, making it one of the biggest (yet most exclusive) fundraising nights in New York, having made $12 million in 2014!

Following last night's festivities, we've compiled a list of our 10 all time favourite looks from the Met Gala, from Cher's sheer '71 gown, to Rihanna's '09 tuxedo; have a peek at our faves of the past.

CHER, 1971

At the first ever Met Gala in 1971, Cher flaunted this very sheer and very feathery floor-length gown which was designed by Bob Mackie. While most of the other women who attended opted for a more covered up look, Cher went for the opposite. This particular gown has gone on to influence many outfits in the future, namely Kim Kardashian's dress at the 2015 gala, at which she specifically thanked Cher for the inspiration!

SCARLETT JOHANSSON, 2004

At her first ever Met Gala appearance in 2004, Scarlett Johansson opted for this pearl yellow silk dress by Calvin Klein. Although she was yet to reach the peak of her Hollywood acting career, this gown did, at least, solidify her position as a classic fashion beauty!

SARAH JESSICA PARKER, 2006

In 2006, the gala's focus was the current exhibition being held at the museum; AngloMania. To dress appropriately for the theme, SJP attended the ball alongside British designer Alexander McQueen, with both of them sporting matching tartan McQueen outfits.

CATE BLANCHETT, 2007

For the Poiret themed gala of 2007, actress Cate Blanchett opted for a layered, fringed gold Balenciaga gown to give a subtle nod to one of the most influential designers of the early twentieth century.

RIHANNA, 2009

This is the first of Rihanna's two appearances on our favourite Met Gala looks list! In 2009 she sported a gorgeous Dolce & Gabbana tuxedo with exaggerated shoulders, completed with a bowtie!

CAREY MULLIGAN, 2012

2012 was the year of the Schiaparelli and Prada exhibit's showing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. To coincide with the theme, Carey Mulligan opted for a sleeveless tea-length dress covered in huge sequins, designed by none other than the house of Prada itself.

LUPITA N'YONGO, 2014

Since she first burst on to the screen, Lupita has always been at the top of a lot of fashion lists, and her first appearance at the Met Gala back in 2014 was no exception. She flaunted a bedazzled green number by Prada that looked like it had just jumped out of a Disney film!

ANNE HATHAWAY, 2015

With the theme being the China: Through the Looking Glass exhibit, Anne Hathaway was inspired by Buddha to collaborate with Ralph Lauren to create this amazing hooded gold gown for the 2015 gala.

CLAIRE DANES, 2016

There wasn't really any competition when it came to picking our favourite from last night's fashion - it had to be real life Disney princess Claire Danes in this amazing light-up Zac Posen gown!
