From high drama over at Alexander McQueen to laid back luxe at Topshop Unique, AW12 saw a new style army taking over the catwalks, primed and ready for battle in military inspired attire...

We love the deliciously dingy colour palette of khaki, olive, navy and brown, the mannish overcoats and the nod to femininity with luxurious velvet, silk and leather belted at the waist for a ladylike silhouette...

For guys, a mix of casual camouflage, chunky knitwear and flying coveralls with more structured pieces like woolen trench coats and dress jackets. Top marks for dedication to the guy wearing the gas mask (fun fact: there are 36 people on Lookbook who've published pictures of themselves wearing gas masks. THIRTY. SIX. #toomuchtimeontheirhands)...

Structured pieces in leather and suede are key to this look, from high waisted leather trousers (keep them voluminous at the thigh for added jodhpur points!) to slim cut pencil skirts, elegant leather gloves and belted leather trenches...

Leave your Slipknot preconceptions at the door, the boiler suit or flying coveralls as they're known in the military world is back! Worn tied at the waist it's a great alternative to trousers and contributes nicely to the layered look that reigns supreme this winter...

Outerwear is the big hero of this look: keep it casual with a flash of camouflage from a field jacket or four pocket camo shirt, play dress up with gold frogging in a band uniform jacket, stay cosy in a classic aviator shearling jacket, and laugh in the face of plummeting winter temperatures with an army or navy greatcoat or trench.
